Obituary for Helen Louise Moe

Helen Louise (Biesecker) Moe, of Chambersburg, passed away at her home on Sunday, February 4, 2018, at 93 years of age with her son at her side. She was born July 16, 1924 at her family’s farm in Duffield, PA to Charles L. and Edna K. Biesecker (ne Lowry).

She attended Duffield Elementary, Stoufferstown Elementary, and Chambersburg High School. After graduation in 1942, she attended Carnegie Tech/West Penn Hospital, one of only two institutions in the country to offer a combination nursing and bachelorette degree program. She graduated in 1947 with a degree in Nursing Education.

After working at Chambersburg Hospital and as a school nurse for Guilford, Mont Alto, and Quincy Townships, she became a nurse supervisor at Meadville City Hospital. Following a 6-month pediatric nursing course at Children’s Hospital in Washington DC, Helen became a nursing supervisor at the National Institutes of Health. During this time, she worked in the Infectious Diseases Service and later for the Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases Institute, including a stint in the Cystic Fibrosis Ward.

Also, during this time, she met her future husband, Preston J. Moe. They were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Chambersburg on October 12, 1963 and would remain married for the next 53 years until his passing on March 7, 2017. She retired from NIH in order to start a family, which began with the birth of her son James Moe in 1971.

For the last 46 years, Helen has been an active member of the Chambersburg community. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, and of the American Association of University Women.

She was a volunteer and philanthropist on her own and through Trinity Lutheran Church, of which she has been a member since 1942. She and Preston established a legacy of giving nationally, and more importantly locally, that will continue on.

She is survived by her beloved son James L. Moe of Los Angeles, CA and many friends who loved her dearly.

Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Shippensburg. A service in celebration of Helen’s life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 431 Philadelphia Avenue, on Saturday, February 17 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Dr. Sharon F. Kelly officiating. A visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the SCCAP Franklin County Homeless Shelter, 223 South Main Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
