Obituary for Joyce E. Trostel

Joyce R. (Ebbert) Trostel, age 78, a resident of Laurel Run in Fayetteville and formerly of Biglerville, made her faith journey to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 4, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Monday, November 13, 1939, at home, on her parent’s dairy farm, near Biglerville. She was the daughter of the late Arthur J.G. and Ruth A. (Eyler) Ebbert.

Joyce was predeceased by her beloved husband of 57 years, Donald E. Trostel, who passed in 2015. The couple were high school sweethearts. Don graduated in 1956 and Joyce, in the class of 1957, with honors in music, academics and sports. She was employed for a short time at C.H. Musselman Co. in Biglerville. As a young wife and mother, she decided with her deep passion of music and her duties and love of family, she would teach piano in her home studio. She soon became very involved in the music of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Arendtsville. She taught piano to a countless number of students during her 55 years of teaching adults and children from several school districts. With this passion increasing, she accepted the position of church organist/pianist and has accompanied many soloists, small and large choruses, ensembles, cantatas, and special programs, both community and church affiliated. After many years, Joyce sadly resigned her church position at Trinity because of her health. She continued to teach a few students and play the organ and piano for Bible study and services at Laurel Run.

Joyce dearly loved her family and was very proud of their life achievements, actively attending her children and grandchildren’s sports activities. She was a Golden Member of Gettysburg Chapter #392 Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years, a Golden Rule Sunday School class member, and Sunday School pianist. She belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary of Arendtsville Fire Company, was pianist and a member of the former Biglerville Grange, and a life member of Oakside Community Park. She and her husband owned and operated Mt. View Fruit Farms and Hillside Orchards during their working days.

She is survived by her daughter, Monya T. and husband Tim G. Guise, son, Michael D. and wife Laura J. (Starner) Trostel, all of Biglerville, four grandchildren: Matthew S. and wife Erin A. Trostel, Ryan M. Trostel, Justin S. Trostel, all of Biglerville and Ashleigh A. and husband Taylor S. Groff of Seven Valleys; two great-grandsons, Daegan Michael Trostel, and Garber Henry Groff, a sister, Donna and husband Edward Plank of Fayetteville, two brothers, Dennis Ebbert and wife Judy Breighner-Ebbert of Biglerville and Ronald and wife Deborah Ebbert, brother-in-law R. Barry and wife Jenny Trostel of Biglerville, sister-in-law Jane and husband Donald Waddell of Gettysburg, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Scott E. Trostel who passed in 1978, a brother-in-law, Kenneth Cullison and sister-in-law, Joyce Ebbert.
